Democracy? Really??
Both the US and ally Israel are concerned by the prospect of states whose policies may be formulated based on the desires of their people " potentially giving fuller expression to Islamist forces " rather than the deals their rulers make with other nations. Full story here
Am i the only one who finds it odd that Democracy is only "good," or "acceptable" when it agrees with those already in positions of power? When it "conforms" to the needs and wants of "other" (U.S., Israel, U.K. etc. ) powerful countries?
Yes i am fully aware of the dire consequences of radical majorities taking power, and i actually agree with wanting foreign governments to be those who agree with the U.S. on many if not all issues. But that is because i am selfish. You know, self preservation, and all that.
But its the misused term Democracy, that i want you to think about. I have long maintained that we in th U.S. do not live in a real Democracy. Best recent example is presidential elections. When the popular vote, the "majority" vote doesn't get "their" man elected. Instead we go with "electoral college". That in and of itself smacks of anti- democracy.
Democracy is by definition -
a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation
