Stem Cell Advances

Harvard scientists have successfully converted human skin cells into embryonic stem cells without using a human egg or new embryo. Scientists emphasize its NOT yet a replacement for conventional stem cells, and urged that current methods should be continued until such time that the new method is shown to be as effective.

And it has been pointed out that for now the new Harvard procedure requires cell lines taken from a human embryo.
"It's not as if this research says there is no need for embryonic stem cells," said Sean Tipton, spokesman for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. "It continues to show the enormous potential of stem cell research and highlights the value of embryonic stem cells as a source of research material."

Well there appears to be a method on the horizon that "may" please all groups, but in the meantime we must stay the course.

To Whom It May Concern;
The main problem with embryonic stem cells should be, of course, the immorality of killing one human, without their permission, to help another. But the next biggest obstacle is the embryonic stem cells themselves. They are not as effcient in helping any disease as adult stem cells in study after study.
One such study:

The following is part of the story:
"Seattle, WA (LifeNews.com) -- Clinical trials of treatments of patients using adult stem cells shows positive results, but doctors have not known whether patients will continue showing progress long-term. A new study of blood cancer patients who had stem cell transplants are nearly as healthy as their peers 10 years later.
Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Research Cancer Center examined 137 patients a decade after their procedures.

Reporting their results in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the researchers say they were "largely indistinguishable" from the general population.

The finding is important because more than 45,000 receive the adult stem cell transplants each year. No one has benefited from embryonic stem cells, which have caused tumors, convulsions, and patients to reject the cells when inserted."
